Many people start creating website with a sole purpose of making money. And one of the most sought after method is using Google Adsense. This probably had to do with the fact that Google is a big multi billion dollars company who is very unlikely to bankrupt at least in a foreseen future, eliminating the most feared reason for unpaid publishing fees. In other word, if you do your end of the bargain properly, you can be sure that Google will pay you in time.
But how much exactly can you make from Adsense? All over the net there are plenty of trusted source where you can see that making big money with Adsense is possible. Some of the biggest player such as Markus Frind from PlentyofFish makes around USD 300,000 a month doing some lame free dating site while Kevin Rose from Digg make about USD 250,000 per month. And there are also stories here and there about some webmasters make around USD 10,000 a month.
So how do you get to make that much money of Adsense? Well, the first thing is traffic. Those big money makers made that much because of the traffic. There is nothing you can do if you have no traffic. And this traffic must come from legitimate sources such as search engine, link from high PR page and directories. It will look very suspicious if you have a low traffic website and all of a sudden you’re getting plenty of type in traffics. There are plenty of ways of getting legitimate traffic but we are not going to talk about that on this post.
After traffic is conversion rate or CTR or Click Through Rate. This is the percentage rate of your visitors who clicked on your Adsense as oppose to your visitors who’s just browsing and passed through. This number varied from very low which is 0.00% which mean no one click on your Adsense, to as high as 90 % which is what usually happen to a new site with not many visitor but had a very good ad targeting and placement. However, 90% would not usually last. If you can get 30% CTR from your visitors, then you should be happy.
The next one is targeting your keyword to a high paying Adword. This is sometimes associated with Black hat and spammy page where thousand spammy pages were designed specially for a high paying keyword. The famous one was the Mesoliothema cancer keyword. In those days, a lot of Asbestos victims are looking for attorney to represent their case, and lawyer, as creative as they are, not exactly shy in spending big advertising money to get their ads on the top of the searches. Today, this is not a good idea as Google would likely to ban you for doing so. However, there is nothing wrong with looking for the best paying keyword in your niche and informing Google through site optimization that your website is also covering those keywords. This could be done as simple as your meta keyword, heading and Google section targeting.
The logical step after that would be to prevent low paying ads from displaying at your website. Some Adword are MFA or Made For Adsense type of site. These are spammy and crappy and being banned all the time by Google but still some are popping up here and there. This type of website would place a very low bidding on an ads, the ads gets displayed at your website, your visitor click on it, not really happy with the MFA site, the MFA site owner then hopes the unhappy visitors clicks on one of the MFA site’s Ads, thus making him money. He would off course already target some high paying ads keyword to be displayed on his site. You can stop this by putting known MFA site in your competitive ads filter. You can start here, however, as MFA sites come and go, you need to keep changing the list. DO NOT click on your ads just to find out whether the ads are MFA ads. Also by limiting the number of ads displayed on your site, you will ensure that what showing will only be the highest paying ads on that target.
The last one is to blend your Adsense so visitors do not feel reluctant to click your Adsense. The first blending is easy. This is how you make as if your Adsense is part of your site. You can do this by playing around with the color of your Adsense in Adsense Setup. Understand that color is the only thing you can change. DO NOT change the font or it looks even if you are a savvy html programmer. The second blending is a bit harder to achieve. This is got to do with the keyword targeting, but instead of targeting for high paying keyword, you target for ads that is relevant to what your website is about. So if your website talks about dog, you need to let Google know that it is about dog, so Google will spit dogs’ related Adsense ads on your site. Your visitors who are looking for things about dogs in the first place will feel less inclined to click on the ads.
